Garbage Disposal Not Working? Try These Safe Checks First

A few disposal problems you can solve in two minutes. Never put your hand inside the disposal, even with the power off.

It hums but doesn't spin — the blades are jammed.

  1. Turn the switch off.
  2. Look under the disposal for a small hex socket in the center of the bottom. Insert the hex key that came with the unit (usually 1/4 inch) and work it back and forth until it turns freely.
  3. Press the red reset button on the bottom.
  4. Run cold water and try it again.

It makes no sound at all.

  1. Press the red reset button on the bottom of the unit.
  2. Check the breaker panel for a tripped breaker.
  3. If it plugs in under the sink, make sure the plug is seated.

Still not working, or it trips the reset again right away? The motor may be failing or something is lodged deep inside. Time to call us.

Garbage Disposal Leaking Under the Sink

Where the water comes from decides the fix.

Leaking from the top

  • The seal around the sink flange has failed or loosened
  • We remove the disposal, reseal the flange, and remount it
  • Usually a repair, not a replacement

Leaking from the side

  • Check the dishwasher hose connection and the drain pipe going to the wall
  • Loose clamps and worn gaskets are common
  • Usually a quick repair

Leaking from the bottom

  • The housing is cracked or the internal seals have worn out
  • A disposal leaking from the bottom can't be repaired — it needs to be replaced

What to do now: turn off the disposal at the switch, put a bucket under it, and stop running water down that side of the sink.

Kitchen Sink Backed Up Behind the Disposal

When the sink won't drain, the disposal often gets blamed. Often the real clog is further down.

Clog inside the disposal

Food and grease packed in the grinding chamber. Usually cleared on the spot.

Clog in the trap under the sink

The curved pipe below the disposal. We take it apart and clear it.

Clog past the trap, in the wall

Grease and food built up in the drain line. A plunger or a short snake won't reach it. We clear it with a drain machine.

Both sides of a double sink backed up

The clog is past the point where both sides join, in the line to the wall or beyond.

If the line keeps clogging, the drain behind the sink may need hydro jetting. Our drain cleaning and hydro jetting team clears grease and buildup that a snake can't reach.

Repair or Replace Your Garbage Disposal?

Situation Usually
Jammed but the motor runs strongRepair (clear the jam)
Leaking at the sink flange or dishwasher hoseRepair
Leaking from the bottom of the unitReplace
Motor hums weakly or keeps trippingReplace
Unit is over 10 years old with any major problemReplace
Rusted body or constant smellReplace

Most disposals last about 8 to 15 years. When a repair costs close to a new unit, replacing it is the better value.

Garbage Disposal Replacement and Installation

  • Replacing an old disposal. We remove the old unit, check the sink flange and drain connections, install the new disposal, reconnect the dishwasher, and test for leaks.
  • Installing a disposal you already bought. Bought one but stuck on the install? We install it, connect the power cord and dishwasher, and test it. If it doesn't fit your sink or a part is missing, we tell you before we start.
  • Adding a disposal where there wasn't one. The sink needs a power source: an outlet under the sink controlled by a wall switch, or a push button air switch on the countertop. If there's no outlet, you may need an electrician first. We tell you exactly what's needed before you buy.
  • Dishwasher connection. When a disposal and dishwasher share the drain, we connect them correctly so the dishwasher drains through the disposal without backing into the sink.
  • Reconnecting after a remodel or new countertop. New sink or countertop? We reinstall the disposal, the drain, and the dishwasher line.

Garbage Disposal FAQs

New disposals come with a small plastic plug inside the dishwasher inlet. It has to be knocked out when a dishwasher is connected. If it's left in, the dishwasher can't drain. We check this on every install.

Grease, oil, coffee grounds, eggshells, pasta, rice, potato peels, celery, onion skins, bones, and fruit pits. These either pack into a paste or wrap around the blades.

About an hour for a straight swap. A new install where there wasn't a disposal before takes longer depending on whether power and drain connections are already in place.

Food stuck under the splash guard and inside the grinding chamber. Run cold water with ice and a little dish soap. If the smell stays, the drain line behind it may be holding food and grease — our drain cleaning team can clear it out.
